Ear Infections in Children: Symptoms, Pain Relief and When to See a Doctor
Ear pain, fever and tugging at the ear are common signs of a middle ear infection in children. Learn what helps, when antibiotics are needed and the warning signs.
Middle ear infections are common in young children and cause ear pain, fever, irritability and tugging at the ear, often after a cold. Most get better within three days with pain relief such as paracetamol or ibuprofen; antibiotics are needed only in some cases. See a doctor if symptoms last more than three days, there is discharge from the ear, or a child under 2 has symptoms in both ears or is very unwell.
Ear infections are among the most common reasons young children see a doctor. They often follow a cold, because the tube linking the ear and throat is short in children.
Symptoms
- Ear pain
- Fever
- Tugging or rubbing the ear
- Irritability and poor sleep
- Reduced hearing
- Fluid or pus coming from the ear
Swimmer's ear
An infection of the outer ear canal is common after swimming, which many UAE families do all year. It causes pain when the outer ear is pulled, itching and discharge. It is treated with ear drops after a doctor's examination.
Home care
- Give paracetamol or ibuprofen at the right dose for your child's age and weight.
- Offer plenty of fluids.
- Let your child rest.
- Don't put cotton buds or oils in the ear.
Do children need antibiotics?
Many middle ear infections clear on their own within three days. Your GP may recommend antibiotics if your child is very young, very unwell, has an infection in both ears, has discharge from the ear, or isn't improving.
When to see a doctor
- Symptoms last more than three days
- Fluid or pus comes from the ear
- Your child is under 2 and has symptoms in both ears
- Your child has repeated ear infections or hearing problems
Seek urgent care for swelling or redness behind the ear, a stiff neck, high fever with drowsiness, or if your child seems very unwell.
